David Lasley Chat - March 8, 1999

DAVID - logged on. - Mon Mar 8 9:05pm ET - Mozilla/4.03 [en] (Win95; U ;Nav)

Joel - Welcome to our live chat with veteran performer and songwriter David Lasley.
Joel - Welcome to the chat, David. Thanks so much for coming.
DAVID - HI JOEL
DAVID - HAPPY MONDAY!
Joel - While you can't see them, we have a crowd of folks watching and anxious to hear what you have to say.
Joel - Thanks, and the same to you.
Joel - Let's get started.
DAVID - THAT'S GOOD!! I'M STILL NERVOUS!
Joel - Most of our visitors know of your work with Dames Taylor, David, but you've had a pretty busy career.
DAVID - OK...
Joel - No need to be nervous. We're all fans here.
DAVID - YEAH, REGARDING MY CAREER, I'VE BEEN LUCKY
Joel - Could you tell us about some of the songs you've written over the years that were recorded by others?
DAVID - WOW, WHERE DO I START? LET'S SEE...
DAVID - LET'S START WITH BONNIE RAITT...
Joel - I realize there are quite a few.
DAVID - FROM THE ALBUM "STREETLIGHTS," I WROTE "I GOT YOU ON MY MIND"
DAVID - AND SANG BACKGROUND ON IT, TOO... THIS IS THE SAME ALBUM THAT HAS "ANGEL FROM MONTGOMERY" ON IT, AND I SANG BACKGROUND ON THAT, TOO
DAVID - FROM BONNIE'S "NICK OF TIME," MY SISTER, JULIE, AND I WROTE "I AIN'T GONNA LET YOU BREAK MY HEART AGAIN"
Joel - How about other artists? Could you just give us a sampling of the long list of folks you've written for?
DAVID - AND A SONG THAT I WROTE THAT BONNIE RECORDED BUT HASN'T RELEASED CALLED "CHANGE ALL OF THAT" WAS RECORDED BY ARNOLD MCcULLER ON HIS LAST ALBUM
DAVID - OK... RITA COOLIDGE ("LOVE ME AGAIN"), MAXINE NIGHTENGALE ("LEAD ME ON") -- THAT WAS MY FIRST MILLION-SELLING RECORD....
Joel - That's a great song. Sadly, that CD is pretty hard to find now ("Exception To the Rule")
DAVID - CRYSTAL GAYLE ("THE BLUE SIDE"), BOZ SCAGGS ("JOJO"), LUTHER VANDROSS ("CRAZY LOVE"), ANITA BAKER ("YOU BRING ME JOY"),
DAVID - I COULD GO ON...
Joel - I know at times the tables have turned and the folks you sing backup for do the same for you. What was it like having James Taylor sing backup for you on your album?
DAVID - AMAZING!
DAVID - IT WAS INTERESTING HOW IT HAPPENED..
Joel - That was on Missin' Twenty Grand, right?
DAVID - IT WAS AUGUST OF 81 AND WE WERE LEAVING FOR THE JAPANESE TOUR WITH JT
DAVID - YES, IT WAS ON MISSIN' TWENTY GRAND... I CASUALLY TOLD HIM THAT I WAS MAKING THIS RECORD AND SORT OF HALF ASKED HIM TO BE A PART OF IT AND NEVER MENTIONED IT AGAIN
DAVID - IN OCTOBER WHEN WE GOT BACK TO L.A. AFTER JAPAN, JAMES MENTIONED THAT HE HAD A SESSION FOR JONI MITCHELL FOR HER "WILD THINGS RUN FAST" ALBUM
DAVID - AND HE ASKED ME, "AND WHEN DO YOU WANT ME TO SING FOR YOU?"
DAVID - AND I WAS COMPLETELY AMAZED THAT HE REMEMBERED...
Joel - I guess he didn't have to ask twice?
DAVID - NO, HE DIDN'T... LOL
Joel - Who else has done backup for you on your solo albums?
DAVID - AND THE FUNNY PART WAS THAT I WAS IN A&M'S STUDIO A AND JONI WAS IN B OR C, SO ALL HE HAD TO DO WAS WALK ACROSS THE HALL
DAVID - LUTHER VANDROSS AND RITA COOLIDGE BOTH SANG ON "SOLDIERS ON THE MOON"
DAVID - AND OF COURSE ARNOLD MCCULLER SANG ON EVERY RECORD I EVER MADE
Joel - And didn't some JT band members also work on your albums?
DAVID - AND PRISCILLA COOLDIGE, RITA'S SISTER, SANG ON MISSIN' TWENTY GRAND, AS IS BONNIE RAITT.
DAVID - BONNIE SANG ON "IF I HAD MY WISH TONIGHT" FROM MTG, WHICH WAS MY HIT SINGLE
DAVID - BOB MANN PLAYED GUITAR ON ALL OF SOLDIERS..
DAVID - AND LUIS CONTE PLAYED PERCUSSION ON THAT ONE..
DAVID - PETE TOWNSHEND PLAYED GUITAR ON MTG
Joel - Your solo work can be tough to find in stores. Any tips for folks hoping to find them?
DAVID - EARLY ON, I WORKED WITH DON GROLNICK..
DAVID - UNFORTUNATELY, THEY'RE HARD TO FIND... THE CUT OUT BINS ARE MY FRIEND
DAVID - LOL
DAVID - BUT I'M WORKING ON A RETROSPECTIVE OF MY WORK
Joel - And that should see wide release?
DAVID - I HOPING SO
Joel - I know a lot of your songs have been collaborations with other artists. Which ones stand out in your mind?
DAVID - SORRY, I'M HOPING SO
DAVID - COLLABORATIONS... "DARK SIDE OF YOUR SOUL" WITH KIKI DEE WAS ONE OF MY FAVORITES
Joel - And back to the retrospective: Any idea when we might be able to look for it?
DAVID "GOOD MAGIC" WITH JOSH KADISON, WHO SANG "JESSE" IS ANOTHER OF MY FAVORITES
Joel - Which album was that on?
DAVID - I'VE WRITTEN A SONG WITH SOPHIE HAWKINS CALLED "MOMENTARY WEAKNESS" THAT I REALLY LIKED, AND HAVE WRITTEN SONGS WITH LUTHER VANDROSS OVER THE YEARS
Joel - We've probably heard you in theaters, too, haven't we? You've worked on a lot of soundtracks, haven't you?
DAVID "DARK SIDE OF YOUR SOUL" WAS ON KIKI'S "STAY WITH ME" ALBUM
DAVID - YES, I'VE DONE A LOT OF SOUNDTRACK WORK...
DAVID - MY VERY FIRST WAS IN 1972 FROM THE FILM "RHINOCEROUS" WITH ZERO MOSTEL
DAVID - I SANG "WHAT DID YOU DO TO YOURSELF?" -- TWO VERSIONS, HIGH AND LOW... GALT MCDERMOTT, WHO WROTE THE "HAIR" MUSIC, WROTE THAT SONG
Joel - That's a title you don't forget. Any others?
DAVID - I ALSO SANG "WHAT A PIECE OF WORK IS MAN" ON THE "HAIR" MOVIE SOUNDTRACK, ALTHOUGH THE SCENE WAS CUT FROM THE MOVIE, BUT THE SONG IS ON THE SOUNDTRACK
Joel - Was it during your work in the music "Hair" that you met Arnold McCuller?
DAVID - I ALSO SANG "TEAM WORK" FROM "BODY ROCK," A MOVIE WITH LORENZO LAMAS; THIS WAS A SONG THAT WAS BIG IN AEROBICS CLASSES
DAVID - I MET ARNOLD IN 1971 WHEN WE WERE BOTH IN THE TOURING COMPANY OF THE PLAY "HAIR" NOT THE MOVIE, BUT INTERESTINGLY, ARNOLD AND I BOTH WORKED ON THE MOVIE SOUNDTRACK
Joel - Have you done other theater work since "Hair?"
DAVID - I ALSO SANG ON THE SOUNDTRACKS OF THE MOVIES "THE BLACK STALLION," "THE OUTSIDERS" AND "HUDSON HAWK," AND TONS MORE...
Joel - That's quite a resume.
DAVID - YES, AFTER I FINISHED WITH THE TOURING COMPANY OF "HAIR," I MOVED TO NEW YORK CITY AND WAS IN "DUDE," WHICH WAS WRITTEN BY GEROME RAGNI AND GALT MCDERMOTT, WHO WROTE HAIR
DAVID - THANK YOU (RE RESUME COMMENT)
DAVID - AND I WAS IN SOME OFF BROADWAY STUFF, ONE PLAY CALLED "HARRIET MCDONALD" AND IN THINGS AT CAFE LA MAMA
Joel - You told us you're working on a retrospective on your work. What else do you have planned for the future? Will you continue to perform with JT?
Joel - And when might the retrospective show up in stores?
DAVID - YES, I'LL CONTINUE TO PERFORM WITH JT UNTIL THEY PUT ME OUT TO PASTURE, LOL
DAVID - THE RETROSPECTIVE IS A HUGE UNDERTAKING, 60 SONGS, SO IT'S GOING TO TAKE SOME TIME, BUT I HOPE BY THE END OF THE YEAR, MAYBE BEFORE!
Joel - We all enjoy your work with JT, of course, and hope that goes on in the future.
Joel - If it's okay with you, David, we'll switch gears here and in a minute we'll open up the chat to everyone.
DAVID - PLUS, I'M CONTINUING TO DO SESSION WORK AND SONGWRITING
Joel - Thanks so much for agreeing to come talk to us. We really appreciate your coming.
DAVID - THANK YOU, JOEL (RE WORK WITH JT)...
Joel - David has a regular mailing address if you'd like to get in touch with him, everyone:
DAVID - THANKS FOR HAVING ME...
Joel - David Lasley / PO Box 46667 / Los Angeles, CA 90046
DAVID - THIS IS A TRIP...
Joel - No email for now, but maybe someday, David? :0
DAVID - SOON-ISH
Joel - Thanks again. Things will get wild in a minute, but I know everyone at least wants to say hello.
Joel - One minute, please.
