Joel - We know you were away for a while, though. What were your impressions of the mini-tour of the East earlier this year?
DAVID - ACTUALLY, I MISS WORKING WITH AND BEING WITH JAMES
DAVID - MY FIRST IMPRESSION WAS, WOW, WHAT A DIFFERENCE SINCE I'VE DONE THE CHAT HERE AT JTO, PEOPLE WERE WAVING TO ME
DAVID - AND ASKING ME TO SIGN AUTOGRAPHS, PEOPLE WERE SHOWING ME COPIES OF MY RECORDS
Joel - Fans were really excited to see and hear the inclusion of some of JT's less-played songs like First of May, Cha Cha Cha, and Yellow And Rose. Did you have to learn or re-learn those songs for the tour?
DAVID - AND THANKING ME FOR SHARING STORIES OF LIFE ON THE ROAD IN THE JTO ARTICLE
Joel - The recognition hasn't happened as much in the past?
DAVID - YES, I DID HAVE TO RELEARN, VERY MUCH! ESPECIALLY FIRST OF MAY
DAVID - I DIDN'T HAVE TO DO MUCH RELEARNING ON LIKE EVERYONE SHE KNOWS BECAUSE I LIKE IT SO MUCH
Joel - Have you ever performed it yourself?
DAVID - RE RECOGNITION, YEAH, I THINK IT'S GIVEN ME A CHANCE TO GET CLOSER TO JAMES' FANS
DAVID - NO, I HAVEN'T... THE ONLY JT SONG I RECORDED WAS LOOKING FOR LOVE ON BROADWAY ON MISSIN' 20 GRAND, AND I'VE SUNG BRIGHTEN YOUR NIGHT WITH MY DAY LIVE
Joel - They're your fans too, of course. ;) That's why we have so many folks lurking here in the chat tonight.
DAVID - WELL, THAT IS CERTAINLY A REASSURING THOUGHT
Joel - There were also some personnel surprises on this JT tour. What was it like haveing Owen Young or Seiji Ozawa sharing the stage?
DAVID - IT WAS REALLY FUN, AND IT MEANT MORE PEOPLE ON THE BUS, LOL (EXCEPT SEJII, OF COURSE)
Joel - Now that the JT side of things has died down for a while, what are your plans?
DAVID - HAVING SEIJI ON THE STAGE WAS GREAT, HE WAS VERY FRIENDLY AND FUNNY
Joel - I know a lot is happening with your music -- both new stuff and back catalog recordings.
Joel - First the older stuff 00 I hear that there may be a re-release of some of your early music?
DAVID - I'M WORKING ON A REISSUE OF A DEMOS ALBUM THAT I MADE IN THE 1980S, WHICH WAS AT THAT TIME A 24-SONG ALBUM SET. NOW IT IS GOING TO BE RELEASED ON CD AS A 40-SONG 2-CD SET
DAVID - I MASTER IT WEDNESDAY, IN FACT
Joel - Any idea when that might be available, and where?
DAVID - IT'S BEING RELEASED IN JAPAN ON COOL SOUND AND MAY HAVE A SHOT AT DOMESTIC RELEASE
Joel - That's great. We'll certainly hope it shows up in stores here.
DAVID - THEY'RE A LABEL THAT REISSUES 70S/80S CALIFORNIA SINGERS/SONGWRITERS AND THEY'RE VERY DEDICATED TO THE LEGACY OF THAT
DAVID - AT SOME POINT I WILL HAVE COPIES TO SELL, PROBABLY AROUND NOVEMBER
Joel - Any idea why those reissues so frequently come out of Japan rather than US labels?
DAVID - IT'S INTERESTING, THEY HAVE A GREAT FASCINATION WITH CALIFORNIA LIFE AND MUSIC, ESPECIALLY, JT, JONI MITCHELL, LINDA RONSTADT, THE EAGLES, THAT TYPE OF MUSIC
Joel - Also, I know one of your older songs, "Merry Go Round," is showing up on a new release. Can you tell us about that?
DAVID - ALSO, I HAVE LEARNED THAT ANOTHER LABEL IN JAPAN, VIVID SOUNDS...
DAVID - IS FINALLY RELEASING MISSIN' 20 GRAND SOON
DAVID - I WILL ALSO HAVE COPIES OF THAT TO SELL TOO IN THE FALL
Joel - Do you think Missin 20 Grand will be for sale here via an import?

Joel - What inspired you to make an album of Nyro songs?
DAVID - OTHER THAN THE GIRL GROUPS, SHE WAS MY GREATEST INSPIRATION

DAVID - AFTER ONE OF HER SHOWS, I WENT BACKSTAGE TO SEE HER
DAVID - AND TALKED ABOUT OLDIES WITH HER AND WE STARTED SINGING OLDIES TOGETHER FOR 45 MINUTES
DAVID - NO, I NEVER RECORDED WITH HER, BUT SHE KNEW ABOUT THIS PROJECT AND
Joel - I also heard that there may be a David Lasley bootleg coming out of Europe. What do you know about it and what do you think of bootleg recordings in general?
DAVID - SHE HEARD MY VERSION OF SAVE THE COUNTRY, BILLIE'S BLUES, BLACKPATCH AND HE'S A RUNNER
DAVID - AND SHE LOVED THEM AND CALLED ME AND SAID KEEP GOING WITH IT

Joel - Does that bother you than someone is selling your recordings without giving you any royalties?
DAVID - MADE FROM PEOPLES' RECORD COLLECTIONS, I ASSUME, MOVIE THEMES I'VE SUNG, MY DEMOS AND SOME OF MY ACTUAL RECORDINGS ON EMI
DAVID - I KNOW SOME OF THE SONGS THAT ARE ON IT BUT NOT ALL OF THEM
Joel - I don't think anyone would blame you for being against the idea.
DAVID - NO, NOT AT ALL BECAUSE IT'S BEEN FAR TOO LONG SINCE PEOPLE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO HEAR THESE THINGS (BECAUSE THEY'RE OUT OF PRINT AND THE RECORD COMPANIES HAVE LOST THE TAPES)
DAVID - NO, JOEL, BECAUSE IN FACT, I HADN'T HEARD A CLEAR VERSION OF MERRY GO ROUND IN 26 YEARS
Joel - That's a great attitude. I'm sure bootlegs are difficult to stop, anyway.

DAVID - BUT CONDUCTED BY CHARLIE CHALMERS

DAVID - THIS WAS EARLY, EARLY DISCO, BEFORE ARMED AND EXTREMELY DANGEROUS, BY FIRST CHOICE
DAVID - THAT IS WHAT IS SO NICE -- IN THE DEEPER IN THE PHILLY GROOVE CD BOOKLET, THEY FINALLY CLARIFY
DAVID - THAT BEN AIKEN, A SINGER FROM PHILLY, WAS ACTUALLY BLACK, AND I AM ACTUALLY WHITE (THERE WAS A CONFUSION ABOUT THAT FOR YEARS)

Joel - All this around the same time JT's career was taking off, too.
DAVID - AND IRONICALLY, THEIR LEAD SINGER SANG HIGH, AS I DO,
DAVID - AND IN 1974, HE MADE A RECORD FOR ARISTA
DAVID - AND THERE WERE MANY OTHER BLACK ARTISTS WHO SANG FALSETTO ON THAT LABEL, AND EVERYONE JUST ASSUMED I WAS BLACK TOO

DAVID - LUTHER VANDROSS AND I DID THE GROUP VOCALS FOR THE FINAL DELPHONICS RELEASE ON ARISTA
DAVID - WELL, JAMES ACTUALLY GOT A HEAD START ON THE DELPHONICS
